Free Weekly Classes for the Visually Impaired

Free Weekly Classes for the Visually Impaired

Basingstoke Discovery Centre, which recently celebrated its 1st birthday, is launching some exciting new offers in 2012 for visually impaired people. In January, there is the launch of free weekly computer classes. The classes are taking place on Thursdays from 12th January with two timeslots available – 9.30-10.30am and 11-12 noon.

“We run the IT classes for anybody with sight loss,” says specialist tutor David Baker. “It does not matter how much computer knowledge you have. If you have never used a computer before or you have never been able to type, we can help you. We can teach you to touch-type, write letters, set up your own email account and use the internet. We have two types of programs - one is called Guide which is very simple and helps you along by giving you menus where you can choose options, or we have another called Supernova which is the big-daddy of them all and works with any program.”

There’s no doubt that computers have transformed the lives of many people, including those with sight problems. So don’t miss out on this great opportunity!

Another development at Basingstoke Discovery Centre is the launch of reading groups based around the needs of people with sight loss. From April 2012, staff will guarantee to help set up and support a new reading group every six months.

“Our existing reading group for people with sight loss is running at full capacity,” says Discovery Centre manager Sarah Gray. “This new initiative will give more people the chance to take part in the hugely popular reading group experience and ensure their needs are met. Others are welcome to join the groups bearing in mind that only titles available in audio and large print formats are selected. And we have an extensive range of reading group sets in alternative formats to choose from.”

So if you enjoy books and like the idea of getting together in a small friendly group, why not give this a try.
