June is a brilliant time in the garden, warm sunshine (hopefully) brings a burst of growth as plants and flowers begin their glorious summer displays. My garden is awash with the purples of hardy geraniums, the oranges of geums, dark reds of the valerian and the pretty white flowers of the strawberry. I love picking all sorts of things from the garden and taking them inside the house to be enjoyed further. I want to celebrate what I have grown and it freshens up the indoors, it brings a smile to my face.

Flower arranging is an art but you don't have to be an expert to whack something you have grown in a pot or vase and place it on the dining room table. It also doesn't have to be flowers either. I have cut sprigs of rosemary, tied them together and placed them in a pot. I have displayed ornamental grasses and cut masses of green foliage like bay, eucalyptus and beech and put them together. Seed heads also make attractive displays, the heads of poppies are particularly nice and make great winter interest indoors. Just leave some for the birds!

Just a quick note on containers. There is fun to be had in using things you have collected from around the house and seeing if they work. Mason jars, drinking glasses, bottles, jugs, you name it, something will work. I like displaying flowers in tin cans. Remove the labels and you have a pretty funky, industrial looking vase. There is no right or wrong with what container to use for what plant and it takes a bit of experimenting to get things right. It’s your style and your choice so have fun. I suppose all I would say is bud vases (small with thin necks) are brilliant for displaying a single flower like a rose. Fish bowls or round bowls are usually for a classic arrangement. Cube or square vases are often good for a bunch of short stemmed flowers. Cut something and bring it in. Enjoy creating.

The vases on my latest reel all come from recently opened Søstrene Grene.
