With The Great Big Green Week coming up on (September 24 – October 2), we thought we’d take this opportunity to remind you of some of our great green initiatives here at Festival Place.
We are fully committed to protecting the environment and, since 2007, have been awarded three Green Hero and six Green Apple awards for our recycling efforts.
We have adopted as many measures as we can to influence our eco efficiency.
Our customers can also do their bit to help shop more sustainably with us with many of our retailers offering eco-friendly products.
Last year, we welcomed innovative zero waste shop Your Home Your World to the centre. YHYW is on a mission to help UK shoppers cut back on plastic use and reduce their carbon footprint, and the shop offers loose herbs, spices, flour, pasta and pulses alongside toiletries, cleaning products and vegan alternatives.
Customers can also bring in their own jars or containers to be filled with their chosen products, and paper bags are available for impulse visits.
We were the first shopping centre to operate an on-site Materials Recovery Facility and Food Digestion Facility, turning food waste into grey water.
More than 8,000 bins are sorted through each year, recycling retail waste into a marketable commodity sold from site, with all proceeds offset against the retailers’ service charge.
Aluminium drinks cans are made into ingots, recycled into new cans, filled and put back on the shelf within six weeks, and more than 170 tonnes of glass bottles and 440 tonnes of paper and cardboard is recycled annually.
We have more than 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere each year by using light timers, photo-sensitive switches, green energy electrical suppliers, more efficient boilers and reducing the centre’s temperature by one degree.
One of the first shopping centres in the UK to install Propelair low-flush toilets, our environmentally friendly loos to save water, save money, reduce carbon emissions and improve hygiene for visitors. Our public toilets also have waterless urinals, and sensor taps.
More than 95 per cent of our suppliers have also shown their commitment to ethical procurement and business practices.
