How to create a bulb lasagne
Creating a bulb lasagne is a great way of making a striking spring display that maximises your pots and containers. The result is a dense, flowery arrangement that packs a real punch in the early months of the year. You can’t eat this type of lasagne though I am afraid…
It’s called a lasagna because of the way you layer up different types of bulbs, one on top of eachother, with a layer of dirt in between. Start with the later flowering and larger bulbs at the bottom, things like Alliums and late flowering Tulips, then in the middle you can have things like daffodils and mid-season tulips and the final layer could be Muscari and Crocus.
There are a few top tips to help create the perfect lasagne:
Make sure your pot is large enough for the amount of bulbs you want to plant. If you are having three layers then your pot needs to be at least 10L. It also needs to have a hole in the button for good drainage.
Choose compost that has good drainage such as a pre-made container compost or add some horticultural grit or sand to an all purpose mix.
Pick bulbs suited to pots such as Tulips, Muscari and Crocus.
Plant bulbs closer in pots than you would in the garden.
Water the pot well in the first few weeks to encourage good root growth.
